PBC Gallery Great Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor, Nene Washes RSPB, 19-21 October 2002 Pictures by Steve Dudley & Trevor Williams |
This juvenile or first winter bird was welcomed by the many local birders who saw it. The bird was seen catching voles and storing them in a "larder".
The question as to whether a second bird was present for a while still remains open. Some observers reported a bird with a broken tail feather and a pattern of sightings that could only be explained by the presence of two birds. The two sets of pictures here both show a probable immature judging by the pale base to the bill. The lower picture shows an apparently shorter tail feather but close examination shows this to be a fully grown outer tail feather with a pale, whitish tip.
