PBC Gallery Water Pipit Anthus spinoletta, Nene Washes RSPB, March 2002 by Brian Stone & Steve Dudley |
These pictures are thought to be of the same bird, one of two present at the RSPB reserve on the Nene Washes feeding on mud in the floods near the south bank.
The ones on the left are video grabs taken on 4 March. Those on the right are digital pics taken at high magnification in very strong wind on 10 March.
This rather grubby-looking individual is in winter plumage and shows a strong, white supercillium, pale, whitish wingbars and tertial fringes, pale underparts and white outer tail feathers. The possibility of the very similar littoralis (Scandinavian) race of Rock Pipit is difficult to firmly exclude. The other bird present is a much cleaner, paler individual, more typical of Water Pipit.
