PBC Gallery Yellow-legged Gull Larus argentatus/cachinnans michahelis, Dogsthorpe Star Pit, 2 November 2001 Video grabs by Brian Stone |
This adult gull shows the classic "Common Gull"-coloured back and a very white head (especially for the time of year). The primaries are well grown with 4 small white tips visible. The bill size, shape and colour also appear well within the range for michahellis.
A third winter michahellis was also seen on 15 October 2001. Click here for pictures.
Pim Wolf comments: The bird you videoed looks like a nearly adult bird, the amount of black/dark on the lower mandible is somewhat more than to be expected for an adult. It looks like it has p8 (possibly p9) full grown but the outermost certainly has not fully grown. In a few weeks time this bird's wing would even be longer/project further beyond the tail.
