PBC Bird Sightings August/September 2000 compiled by George Walthew |
Three Wigeon were at Orton BP on 27 Aug (GW) and ten were at Ferry Meadows on 19 Sep (RH). Seventy Teal on 19 Sep (RH) was the highest count for this species at Ferry Meadows while 42 were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 9 Sep (TW). 200 Mallard were on stubble at Pinnard's Spinneys on 20 Aug and 270 were at Kings Dyke NR on 17 Sep (GW). A Garganey was at Drysides Pit on 17 Sep (GW). A male Ruddy Duck was at CEGB reservoir on 20 Aug, three (2 male + 1 female) were there on 24 Aug, two (male + female) on 27 Aug, two (female + juv) on 3 Sep and one (an immature) on 10 Sep (GW). A male was seen at Kings Dyke NR on 23 Aug and two (male + juv) were there on 3 Sep (GW). Two (a pair) were at Tallington GP on 17 Sep (MC, TW).
A Red Kite was seen at Haddon on 22 Aug (BS). Six or seven Marsh Harriers were at Eldernell on 17 Aug (BS), 13 to 16 were there on 29 Aug, 11 to 13 on 5 Sep and 20 on 7 Sep (GRH). One flew over the A47 at Thorney Toll on 28 Aug (GRH), one (fem/juv) was at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW) and one (juv) was at Drysides Pit on 3 Sep (GW). Sparrowhawks were seen at: Wansford, Morborne Hill, Elton, Stanley Park (BS), Kings Dike at Stanground, Kings Dyke NR, Orton BP, Stanground Wash (GW) and Welland Bank Pit (TW). A Common Buzzard flew over Ash Wood at Elton on 25 Aug, one at Elton on 1st and 7 Sep (BS) and one at Sawtry on 6 Sep (SD). Kestrels were reported from Fletton BP, Hampton Lakes, Kings Dyke NR and Drysides Pit (GW). A Merlin was at Eldernell on 7 Sep (MW). A Hobby flew SE at Eldernell on 17 Aug, one at Morborne Hill on 24 Aug (BS), five at Eldernell on 29 Aug (GRH), one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW), one at Whittlesey on 2 Sep (AF), three at Eldernell on 5 Sep with two on the 7th (GRH), one at Elton and one at Bretton Centre on 7 Sep (BS), one at Barnack on 15 Sep (ToS) and one at Deeping High Bank on 17 Sep (MH). Two Water Rails were heard calling at different locations at Drysides Pit on 20 Aug with singles on 27 Aug 3rd and 10 Sep, and three on the 17th (GW). One at Ferry Meadows on 19 Sep (RH).
A juvenile Little Ringed Plover was at Baston/Langtoft GP on 30 Aug (TW). A Golden Plover was at Hampton Lakes on 20 Aug (GW) and three at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW). About 800 Lapwing were at Eldernell on 29 Aug (GRH). Three Curlew Sandpiper flew eastwards over CEGB reservoir on 27 Aug (GW). A Dunlin was at Baston/Langtoft GP on 9 Sep (TW). Six Ruff were at Nene Washes, one at Dog-in-a-Doublet and one at High Wash on 24 Aug (BS). Two were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 25 Aug, six on 26th, eight on 30th, three on 2 Sep and two 9 Sep (TW). 16 were seen flying over at Kings Dyke NR on 27 Aug (GW). A Black-tailed Godwit was at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW) and at Ferry Meadows on 4 Sep (TS). A Whimbrel flew over Orton Longueville on 24 Aug (SD). A Redshank was at Ferry Meadows on 14th and 18 Aug, 3rd and 4 Sep, with two on 16th and 21 Aug (TS). One at High Wash on 24 Aug (BS) and one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW). A Greenshank was at Ferry Meadows on 17th and 22 Aug and then daily from the 27th until 3 Sept (TS, DB). A Greenshank was at Hampton Lakes on 20th and 27Aug, at Serpentine BP on 27 Aug and at Orton BP on 3 Sep (GW). At Baston/Langtoft GP: one was there on 25 Aug, four on 26th, two on 30th; five 2 Sep, and two on 9th and 17th (TW). Two or three Green Sandpipers most days between 17 Aug and 10 Sept at Ferry Meadows (TS) and three again on 18 Sep (RH). Two flew over Kings Dyke NR on 23 Aug (GW). One at High Wash on 24 Aug (BS). One at Serpentine BP on 10 Sep (GW). One at Stowe Scrape on 17 Sep (TW). One at Funthams Pit also on 17 Sep (GW). One at Welland Bank Pit on 16 Sep (TW). At Baston/Langtoft GP: three on 25th and 26 Aug (TW), five on 30 Aug, eight on 2 Sep, seven on 9 Sep and two on 17 Sep (TW). Two Common Sandpipers were at Ferry Meadows on 17 Aug (DB). One at CEGB reservoir on 20 Aug with two on 24th (GW). Two at Hampton Lakes on 20th and 27Aug (GW). One at Orton BP on 27 Aug (GW). One at Baston/Langtoft GP on 30 Aug, 2nd and 9 Sep (TW).
A Little Gull was seen at Ferry Meadows on 19 Sep (RH). 732 Black-headed Gulls were at CEGB reservoir on 24 Aug. Ten Lesser Black-backed Gull were at CEGB reservoir also on 24 Aug (GW). A Yellow-legged Gull was at Bourges Boulevarde on 5 Sep (MC). An adult Great Black-backed Gull was with two Lesser Black-backed at Orton BP on 3 Sep (GW). Three Common Terns were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW).
Nineteen Stock Doves were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 30 Aug (TW) and 27 at Newborough on 1 Sep (DB). Turtle Doves seen in September: one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2nd (TW), three at Serpentine BP on 10th (GW), one at Morborne Hill on 16th (SD), one at Tallington GP on 17th (MC/TW) and one at Drysides Pit on the same day (GW).
A Barn Owl was seen at Eldernell on 17 Aug (BS), 29 Aug and 5 Sep (GRH). A distant Short-eared Owl was seen at Nene Washes on 24 Aug but not seen well enough to rule out Long-eared (BS). Swifts still seen in September were: one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2nd (TW), three at Bretton on 5th with one on 6th (ToS), one at Peterborough town centre (MiW) and two at Woodston on the same day (SD), one at Elton on 11th, one at Peterborough town centre on 14th (BS), and one at Ferry Meadows on 18th (RH). A Kingfisher were at Orton BP on 17th (BS), 20 Aug and 3 Sep (GW), Drysides Pit on 20 Aug (GW), Baston/Langtoft GP on 25 Aug with two on 9 Sep (TW), and Serpentine BP on 10 Sep (GW). 42 Swallows were at Newborough on 1 Sep (DB) and 40 plus at Morborne Hill on 16 Sep (SD). 30 plus House Martins were at Newborough on 8 Sep (DB).
Eleven Yellow Wagtails were at Eldernell on 29 Aug (GRH), one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW), five following the plough at Newborough on 6 Sep (DB), six at Dog-in-a-Doublet on 8 Sep (BS), one at Elton on 12 Sep (BS) and five at Ferry Meadows on 19 Sep (RH). A Grey Wagtail was at the River Welland at Stamford on 16 Sep (ToS). A White Wagtail was with 12 Pied Wagtails at Hampton Lakes on 3 Sep (GW).
A Redstart was in the Nene Park at Castor on 19 Aug (MR), one at Maxey GP on 23 Aug (RT) and one at Kings Dyke NR on 10 Sep (GW). The first wintering Stonechat was at Stanground Wash on 17 Sep (GW). A Wheatear was at Willow Drove on 18 Aug (DB), two along Kings Dike at Stanground on 17 Sep (GW) and one at Ferry Meadows on 19 Sep (RH). 18 Mistle Thrushes were at Newborough on 18 Aug (DB) and 11 at Frognall on 16 Sep (TW).
A Sedge Warbler were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW) and two were at Drysides Pit on 3 Sep (GW). A Lesser Whitethroat was at Kings Dyke NR on 17 Sep (GW). A Whitethroat was still at Morborne Hill on 16 Sep (SD) and two at Drysides Pit on 17 Sep (GW). A Garden Warbler were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 2 Sep (TW). A Spotted Flycatcher was at Ferry Meadows on 17 Aug (DB), at Kings Dyke NR on 23 Aug and 10 Sep, and Drysides Pit on 3 Sep (GW).
A rare Isabelline Shrike (the first for the PBC recording area) was briefly at Dog-in-a-Doublet on 8 Sep PBC ((BS, GRH, et al.).
A Jay was in a hedge at Orton BP on 3 Sep and another at Serpentine BP on 10 Sep (GW). 66 House Sparrows, in flocks of 30 & 25, were at Newborough on 1 Sep (DB). A flock of 60 Goldfinches were at Crown Lakes CP on 22 Aug, 50 at Orton BP on 27 Aug (GW), 33 at Morborne Hill on 16 Sep (SD) and 150 plus at Baston/Langtoft GP on 16 Sep (TW).
