PBC Bird Sightings May/June 2000 compiled by George Walthew |
A first winter Shag was with a first winter Cormorant at Orton BP on 21 May (GW). Three Little Egrets were at the Nene Washes on 10 Jun (JO, RP, TW, BS & GRH) and just one on 12th and 13th (GW, CM). Two Spoonbills were with the egrets at the Nene Washes on 10 Jun (JO, RP, TW, BS & GRH) and still present on the 12th and 13th (GW, CM).
An adult Bewick's Swan was still at Nene Washes on 13 May (SC). A Black Swan flew onto Gunwade Lake at Ferry Meadows on 21 May (GW). Two Shelduck were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May and 18 Jun and one at Welland Bank Pit on 7 Jun (TW). A male Wigeon was at the RSPB reserve on the Nene Washes on 21 May and 16 Jun (GW). A Pintail male was at Nene Washes on 13 May (SC). Four Garganey were at Nene Washes on 13 May (SC) and a female on 21 May (GW). Nine Red-crested Pochard (a pair + 1 female and 6 juveniles) were at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May, a female and 5 juveniles on 11 Jun and 10 (a pair + 3 juveniles, a female + 4 juveniles) on 16 Jun (TW). A female Pochard with one new young and one male were at Crown Lakes CP on 9 Jun (GW). Two Ruddy Duck (male + female) were at Kings Dyke NR on 7 Jun and at Drysides Pit on 10 Jun (GW).
One Red Kite was seen regularly along the A605 between Elton and Chesterton between 3rd and 15 June (BS). A Red Kite was at Elton on 13 May (SC). Five Marsh Harriers were at Nene Washes on 13 May (SC) and up to four there into June (CM, TW). Two (a pair) were at Deeping High Bank on 24 May and a female at Baston Fen on 31 May (JR). A Sparrowhawk killed a Sand Martin at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May (TW), a male along Eldernell lane on 21 May (GW) and one at Town Bridge, Peterborough on 24 May (BS). Two Common Buzzards were at Morborne Hill on 13 May (SC). An Osprey headed NE at Morborne Hill on 13 May (SC). Kestrels were seen at Morborne Hill (BS, SC), Rings End, Hampton, Alwalton Hill (2), Elton, Norman Cross, Sawtry, Fletton, Chesterton, Stanground (BS), Crown Lakes CP, Kings Dyke NR (GW), and Baston/Langtoft GP (TW). Two Hobbys were at Nene Washes and Morborne Hill on 13 May (SC), two again at Nene Washes on 22 May (CM), three there on 10 Jun (JO & RP), one at Werrington on 30 May (CM), Stanground on 4 Jun (BS), and Baston/Langtoft GP on 11th and 16 Jun (TW). A Peregrine was at Morborne Hill on 13 May (SC).
Two Grey Partridges were at Deeping High Bank on 13 May (TW). A Quail was in a pea field at Kings Delph on 18 Jun (GW). A Spotted Crake was calling on the Nene Washes at Eldernell on 13 May (SC).
Two Oystercatchers were at Stanground Wash on 13 May (SC), two at Hampton Lakes on 21 May (GW), two harrying Marsh Harriers at Deeping High Bank on 24 May (JR), three at Hampton Lakes on 3 Jun (GW), one at Welland Bank Pit on 7 Jun (TW), one at Dog-in-a-Doublet on 10 Jun (GW), one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 11th, 16th and 18 Jun (TW). A Little Ringed Plover was at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May (TW). One at Welland Bank Pit on 21 May (TW) with three on 22 May (BS) and five (3 adults & 2 juveniles) on 7 Jun (TW). One at Baston/Langtoft GP on 18 Jun (TW). Three Ringed Plovers were at Hampton Lakes on 21 May (GW); six at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May, one on 11 Jun and four 18 Jun (TW); two at Welland Bank Pit on 21 May (TW), one at Nene Washes on 6 Jun (TW), three on 10 Jun (GRH, JO & RP) and one on 16 Jun (GW). A Sanderling was at Welland Bank Pit on 21 May (TW). Three Dunlin were at Nene Washes on 10 Jun (GRH, JO & RP).
Twenty Redshank were at Hampton Lakes on 21 May and 39 on 3 Jun (GW). Six Greenshank were at Stanground Wash on 13 May (SC), one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May (TW), two at Nene Washes on 10 Jun (GRH, TW, BS, JO & RP) and one there on 12 Jun (GW). A Green Sandpiper was at Baston/Langtoft GP on 11th 16th and 18 Jun (TW). Two Wood Sandpipers were at Nene Washes and two at Stanground Wash on 13 May (SC). A Common Sandpiper was at Welland Bank Pit on 22 May (BS). Two Turnstone were at Nene Washes on 13 May (SC) and one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 21 May (TW). A Red-necked Phalarope was at Nene Washes on 10 Jun (JO & RP).
A Barn Owl was at Nene Washes on 13 May (SC), one asleep on a post at Morton's Leam on 5 Jun (CM), and one on the south bank of the Nene at Bassenhally Moor on 10 Jun (GW). A Little Owl was at Newborough on 3 Jun (DB) and one at Marholm on 3 Jun (GW). A Long-eared Owl was hunting over grassland at Crown Lakes CP on 22 May (GW).
A Kingfisher was seen carrying food at Ferry Meadows on 25 May (GW). One at Bainton GP on 3 Jun, one at Orton BP on 3 Jun, one at Drysides Pit on 10 Jun and one at Crown Lakes CP on 15 Jun (GW).
Two Grey Wagtails (a pair) were at Water Newton on 13 May (SC). A Nightingale at Bainton GP on 21 May (TW), one at Haddon Crossing on 22 May, one at Crown Lakes CP on 24 May and four at Bainton GP on 3 Jun (GW). A Black Redstart at Dairy Crest in Peterborough on 13 May and 14 Jun (TW). A Spotted Flycatcher wassinging at Haddon Crossing on 24 May, one at Stanley Park on 31 May, one at Elton on 5 Jun (BS), and birds prospecting a nest box in Old Rectory Garden at Market Deeping on 11 and 12 Jun (TW).
Two pairs of Tree Sparrows were at Eldernell Lane on 13 May (SC, TW). A Corn Bunting was singing just north of Helpston village on 3 Jun (GW), and one at Baston/Langtoft GP on 11th and 16 Jun (TW).
