| 2003 |
Common
resident breeder. This year saw an increase in records submitted for this widespread species; reports came in from 23 locations across the PBC area. Peak counts were 200 at Baston & Langtoft GP on 18 Aug (PA, AA), 75 at Farcet Fen on 9 Nov (SPD, KAF) and 72 at Drysides BP on 9 Sep (GW) This species remains a relatively scarce visitor to the Nene Washes, the peak count from this site was 30 on 16 Feb (RSPB). Breeding records received from Hampton West Lake, Ferry Meadows CP, King’s Dyke NR, Nene Washes and Serpentine BP. |
| 2002 |
Common
resident breeder. Again, a relatively poor year, record-wise, for a species that is perceived as common with reports from 16 locations. There was a slight increase in the peak counts reported this year, with 162 at Fletton BP on 14 Aug (BHS) and 154 at Ferry Meadows CP on 7 Oct (SPD); most reports were of flocks of less than 50 birds. Breeding was noted at Hampton West Lake (BHS), up to five pairs bred at King’s Dyke NR (PPa), seven broods were counted at Orton Mere on 31 May (GW). |
| 2001 |
Common
resident breeder. After receiving very few records in 2000, this year sightings came from Bainton GP, Nene Washes, Deeping Lakes NR, Ferry Meadows CP, King’s Dyke NR, Maxey GP, Elton, Orton BP and Milton and Burghley Parks. However counts were very low, the highest being just 103 on the Nene Washes (High Wash) on 15 Jan. Elsewhere, most counts were of under 10 birds, except 40 Bainton GP on 11 Feb and 36 on 22 Jul, 36 over Peterborough 25 Jul and 44 at Maxey GP on 7 Oct & 4 Nov. Breeding records from Ferry Meadows CP, King’s Dyke NR, Deeping Lakes NR, Nene Washes and Bainton GP probably totalled less than ten pairs. Either this species is greatly under-recorded or the post-breeding population has declined by at least two-thirds over the last ten years. Interestingly, counts of Greylag Goose suggest a stable population, and perhaps competition with that species for disturbance-free nest sites has become an increasingly significant factor. |
| 2000 |
Common
resident. Records were received from only three sites. At Bainton GP, there were 33 on 16 Jan, 38 with 11 young on 8 Jul and three on 4 Nov. At the Nene Washes, the peak count was 71 in December and at Orton BP, there were three breeding pairs plus a single 'small race' bird on 7 Apr. |
| 1999 |
Common
resident. A maximum of 79 at Maxey GP 10 Oct and 21 Nene Washes 7 Nov. All breeding records are particularly required. |
| 1998 |
Common
resident. Widespread in suitable habitat. Nene Washes: Can go undetected as a roosting bird in winter, as it is reported by the wildfowlers. Up to seven were present in April and May, but they did not breed. |
