Common resident breeder, common passage migrant and common winter migrant.
This species is abundant throughout the recording area, often forming large flocks in winter. Larger counts included 110+ at Prior’s Fen GP on 31 Jan (SPD), 300+ at Baston & Langtoft GP on 4 Jan (PT) and 100 there on 14 Aug (PA). A flock of 400 were counted at Vine House Farm, Deeping St Nicholas, on 10 Oct and 200 were ringed there the following morning (PNW).

Reported from 45 localities with larger counts including 70 at Castor Mill on 10 Aug (MJW), 80 at Market Deeping on 27 Sep (SPD), 150 at Woodwalton Fen NNR on 28 Sep (RPa) and 60+ at
Prior’s Fen GP on 31 Dec (SPD).

Larger counts of this abundant species were as follows: 200 at West Deeping 11 Jan (MHo); 40 on the Nene Washes 24 Jan (RSPB); 25 in Longthorpe 14 Mar and 30 there on 21 Mar (GRH); 14 in an Elton garden 13 Jun (BHS); 50 at Newborough 5 Sep; with 25 there on 14 Sep and 120 on 21 Sep (DB); 30 at Baston Fen NR 24 Oct (WB); 30 at Langtoft on 6 Nov (RS); 30 at Flag Fen 6 Nov (SPD); and 20 at Beeby’s Pit 30 Dec (BHS).

Notable counts of this common and widespread species included 100+ at Baston Fen Farm on 6 Feb, 100+ at Swaddywell Pit on 4 Jan and 300 at Milton Park on 29 Dec.

Large flocks included c90 at Washingley on 31 Aug (ARF) and 55 in a mixed flock at Milton Golf Course on 20 Dec (WEW).
Nene Washes: One territory was noted at Eldernell Pits. The Poplar Farm area attracted 18 in February and up to 58 in December.
