The first record for the area came in the form of a juvenile bird seen roosting for 15 minutes at Dogsthorpe Star Pit NR on 13 Sep (DP). This coincided with a period of severe gales hitting the east coast. It was there between 4.15 and 4.30pm. At the time, there was a strong north wind blowing and the weather was clear with light cloud cover. The bird appeared to be moulting from juvenile to first-winter plumage. This is the first record for the PBC area of this small gull and the only previous record of this species for Huntingdonshire came from Grafham Water in 1987, when at least 10 birds occurred after storm-force winds. It breeds in the Arctic but moves south to winter in southern waters off the coast of south-west Africa and Peru. In Britain, it is most regularly seen off the coast of Cornwall. |
