Fairly common resident. Single birds were seen regularly on the Nene Washes throughout the year with three there in March and November. At Ferry Meadows CP, 1-2 birds present regularly with five there (a family group) present on 8 Sep (MJW). Three were also recorded at Deeping Lakes NR on 14 Sep (WB) and at Burghley Park on 10 Dec (CW). One or two birds were also reported from a further 35 locations. | 2001 |
Scarce
resident breeder Clearly a popular species with a comfortable population, perhaps benefiting from a continued run of mild winters. Well-reported from a total of 25 sites throughout the year. Usually seen singly, but two together at Bainton GP (BT), the Nene Washes (up to three and described as more frequent here) (RSPB), Peakirk (DB) and the River Gwash near Stamford (CP). Up to three were at Ferry Meadows CP (SPD, CP) and Woodwalton Fen NNR (RMP). Ferry Meadows CP is a superb place to observe this colourful species and birds were seen mating 24 Mar (WB) and displaying 27 Mar (GRH). Few observers are lucky enough to be able to see this species from the garden, but one at a bird bath in a Werrington garden 9 Sep must have been the ultimate treat (MWi). |
