Red-breasted Merganser
Mergus serrator | A* | Rare

1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2003

2003
Rare winter and passage migrant.
Only one record, on 21 Dec, of a drake at Deeping High Bank about a mile north of Crowland Bridge (RB, WB, MW). Although rarely seen away from the coast, the Welland at the Deeping High Bank is the most regular site locally for this species.

2002
Rare winter and passage migrant.
This coastal species was recorded for the third year in succession but remains a rare visitor to the PBC area. During 2002 a male was seen at Deeping High Bank on 12 Jan (AD). Most previous sightings have been of birds associating with Goosander so it often pays to check these flocks carefully.

2001
Red-breasted Merganser © Trevor WilliamsRare winter and passage migrant.
This species is seldom seen inland, so a long-staying male associating with Goosanders along
Deeping High Bank from 24 Feb–6 Mar (AB, BF, JH, TW) is notable.
