2003
Scarce resident breeder.
Reported from 27 sites with a peak count of 16 birds in a single covey at Black Bush Drove on 23 Dec (SPD); the only other double figure count was of 12 at Farcet Fen. Remaining counts were all in single figures.
Birds were noted on territory at eight locations. At the Nene Washes, pairs were recorded at High Wash and Ring's End. Five pairs were noted at
Black Bush, with single pairs at Crowtree (Farcet Fen), Field's End Bridge Farm, Northorpe Slipe and Thurlby Fen. An adult with a chick were at Deeping High Bank on 14 Jun (AD). Three pairs were noted on Farcet Fen and two adults and four juveniles were noted at Farcet Fen on 30 Jul (SPD).

2002
Scarce resident breeder.
The highest counts were both of 18 birds (confirmed as wild) at Grummit's Scrape, 10 Nov (TW), and at White Fen, Benwick, on 17 Dec (RES). Recorded from 15 sites in 2002 - but not more than twice at any - as follows: maximum of four at Black Bush Drove, two at Deeping High Bank, two near Deeping St James, two at Eldernell, four at Farcet Fen, two at Flag Fen, two at Holme Fen, two at Market Deeping, one at Ramsey Fen, a trio at Maxey and two at Deeping Lakes NR. Birds were heard calling at Woodwalton Fen NNR 12 Mar (BHS), Hod Fen, Yaxley, 28 May (BHS), and at White Fen, near Benwick, 1 Jun (SPD). Two pairs were on territory at Ring's End (RSPB).
2001
Scarce resident breeder.
Another poor year for this declining grassland species. Recorded from only 12 sites as follows: seven at Ramsey Fen 8 Jan (RES); eight at White Fen (Benwick) 25 Feb (RES); two at Farcet Fen during Feb–Mar (AL); two regularly seen during Apr–May from Deeping Fen and Deeping High Bank (AD, TW) with a max of four there on 7 May (TW); up to three calling males at Holme Fen during early May (BT, MC) singles at Orton BP 24 May and Hampton Vale 25 May (SPD); 1–2 on the Nene Washes (March Farmers) during May–Jun (WB, MM, OM); one at Deeping Lakes NR 23 Oct (WB); five at
Holme Fen on 16 Nov (BHS) with nine there on 30 Dec (SPD, MW); and 1–2 present at Eldernell in Nov–Dec (MF, GRH).

2000
Rare resident.
Largest coveys were ten at both Ramsey St Mary's 9 Jan and Yaxley Fen 16 Aug
. Four were  at Crowland Crossroads on 19 Apr, with two at Conington Airfield 29 Apr and Deeping High Bank 1st, 7th and 12-13 May. A pair was at Thorney Dyke 11 May, one at Southwick 13 May and two at Morborne Hill 25 Jun. After the spring floods, three pairs were found at the Nene Washes (one each at Stanground Wash, Eldernell Wash and March Farmers).
1999
Rare resident.
In the first winter period, one was calling near Elton bridge 13 Feb, four were at Chesterton 26 Feb and two were at Thorney 18 Mar. In spring, two were at
Morborne Hill 19 Apr, a covey was seen at Crowland Crossroads 7 May, two pairs at Ring's End, Baston & Langtoft GP 6 Jun and ten (two adults and eight juveniles) at Crowtree (Farcet Fen) 14 Jun. Towards the end of the year, six were at Morborne Hill 27 Oct and eight were at Farcet Fen 17 Nov.

1998
Scarce resident.
Three were near Stowe on 10 Jan, four were at
Farcet Fen on 5 May, two at Morborne Hill 18th and 23 May, one at Elton 5 Jul, two at Crowland Crossroads 7 Jul, two near Stowe on 10 Oct and eight on Yaxley Fen on 13 Dec. One or two pairs bred at Farcet Fen, one pair Elton (CBR).
Nene Washes: Scarce. Two pairs were on territory around the reserve and a pair at March Farmers.
