The first records were of single birds on 17 March at Etton GP (KAF) and Nene Washes (RSPB), with the main arrival from 1 Apr onwards with the last record being a single juvenile at Prior’s Fen GP on 29 Aug (MW). Four birds seen at Etton GP on 2 Apr (TW) and Nene Washes on 21 Apr (KAF, SPD). Up to three reported from a further nine locations. Breeding was confirmed at Baston & Langtoft GP and Prior’s Fen GP, where 1-2 pairs raised at least two broods. Two pairs were seen displaying on the Nene Washes but did not appear to breed. Scarce
migrant breeder and passage migrant. The first record was one on the Nene Washes RSPB on 9 Mar (BTO) followed by another on 12 Mar (RSPB, BHS, JT), with the first multiple count of three birds at Swaddywell Pit on 23 Mar (CD). Birds then present until August with the last record a single juvenile at Prior’s Fen GP on 8 Aug (BHS). The peak count was of five at Prior’s Fen GP on 4 Aug (MW) with four regularly on the Nene Washes. Up to three birds recorded at a further 10 locations. Two pairs bred on RSPB Low Wash, though their territories overlapped with Garner’s Arable; one was located in a gateway and was promptly predated by Carrion Crows. Juveniles were also reported from Fletton BP, Ferry Meadows CP, Prior’s Fen GP, Baston & Langtoft GP and Deeping Lakes NR, but it was not confirmed if they bred there. |

Scarce
migrant breeder and passage migrant. The first returning bird was at King’s Dyke NR 27 Mar (GW) with singles at Baston & Langtoft GP 29 Mar (with a pair there 31 Mar) and Deeping Lakes NR 31 Mar. During Apr–May, birds reported from Baston & Langtoft GP (three pairs 7 Apr) (TW), Nene Washes (three pairs) (RSPB), Deeping Lakes NR (two pairs) (TW), a single at Hampton Hargate 27 Apr (SPD) and three at Swaddywell Pit on 5 May (TW). Three juveniles at Deeping Lakes NR from 31 May (WB et al), but there were no other confirmed breeding records though nine on the Nene Washes 27 Jun (MW) could have been local breeding birds and offspring. A single at Prior’s Fen GP 7 Jun (GW) and four at Baston & Langtoft GP 22 Jun (TW). During Jul–Sep, 1-4 birds at Prior’s Fen GP (SPD, GW) with three at Maxey GP 30 Jul (TW) and the last at Deeping Lakes NR 22 Sep (WB). |

Rare
summer visitor and uncommon migrant. First seen at Baston & Langtoft GP 18 Mar, with three there 26 Mar. Elsewhere in March, singles were at Langtoft West End GP 26 Mar, Stowe scrape 26 Mar, and the Nene Washes 27-29 Mar. During Apr-May, singles were at the Nene Washes on 12 Apr, 5 May, Stowe scrape 14th and 27 Apr, 7th and 13 May, and at Hampton Lakes 30 Apr. A pair was noted at Fletton BP 1 Apr and King's Dyke BP 20 Apr. Between 1-3 birds were seen at Deeping Lakes NR, with one incubating on 7th and 12 May, and young seen on 22nd. Five were at Hampton Lakes 16 Apr. Two pairs were at Baston & Langtoft GP, with five birds on 1 May. In June, ten were on the Nene Washes, but none bred. Two pairs were at Fletton BP with a brood of recently-hatched young on 24 Jun; a maximum of five birds were at Deeping Lakes NR, a pair at the newt reserve, Orton BP, on 4 Jun and a single at Baston & Langtoft GP on 18 Jun. From 27 Jun to 1 Aug, up to ten (including six juveniles) were at the Nene Washes High Wash. During July, a maximum of seven, including four juveniles were at Deeping Lakes NR, three at Baston & Langtoft GP on 2 Jul, with four noted on 22 Jul. Two pairs plus one brood were still at Fletton BP on 2 Jul, and four were last noted 16 Jul. In August, a single was at Stowe scrape on 10th, with two there on 25th, a single at Hampton Lakes 13th, four at Prior’s Fen GP on 23rd, three on 25th and the last of the year at Baston & Langtoft GP on 30th. |

Rare
summer visitor and uncommon migrant. The earliest date was of a bird at the Nene Washes on 25 Mar, with other records from the locality on eight dates to 17 May, including two on 22 Apr. Also in March, three were at Baston & Langtoft GP on 28th. In Apr-May, singles were at Ferry Meadows CP, the A1 scrape near Stilton, Stilton Fen storm reservoir 15th and 19 Apr and 23 May, Hampton 28 Apr, Fletton BP 19 Apr, with four there on 27th. Two pairs were at Baston & Langtoft GP on 18 Apr. In June, singles were at the Nene Washes 10-17 Jun and on 29 Jun, with two at Ferry Meadows CP on 17 Jun, and three at Fletton BP on 4 Jun. Two pairs were seen displaying at the newt reserve, Orton BP, on 19 Jun. July singles were at Ferry Meadows CP 23 Jul and at Baston & Langtoft GP on 6th, 14th and 23 Jul, with five there, including three juveniles 25 Jul. Up to four were at the latter site until 19 Aug with four also at Deeping Lakes NR on 2 Aug. The final sightings came from the Nene Washes with three there on 2 Sep. |

Common migrant and rare summer visitor. Extreme dates were 24 Mar at Dog-in-a-Doublet (BHS) and 18 Aug at Fletton BP (GW). Birds were seen displaying at Stowe scrape, Dog-in-a-Doublet, Baston & Langtoft GP and Tallington GP, but the only juvenile noted was at Deeping Lakes NR. Other records came from Ferry Meadows CP and Wyman's Bridge (maximum six). Nene Washes: First recorded on 9 May, when two flew west. Another two were noted on 19 May with one on 21 May. In June, three pairs were found nesting on the arable land at Eldernell near the Avocets, though no young were seen and they probably failed. One was present on reserve pools throughout August. |
