2003
Rare resident breeder, scarce passage migrant and common winter migrant.
Notable counts included 35 at Holme Fen NNR on 12 Jan (SPD), 75 at Bainton GP on 31 Jan (BT), 25 at Woodwalton Fen NNR on 5 Jan (MF) and 17 Feb (MW) and 21 at Baston & Langtoft GP on 24 Dec (JJ).
Whilst
Woodwalton Fen NNR and Baston & Langtoft GP were the strongholds, there were numerous reports of small numbers from Castor Hanglands NNR, Eldernell, Elton, Ferry Meadows CP, Glinton, Langtoft, Lord’s Holt, Lynch Wood, Nene Washes, Prior’s Fen GP, Stibbington and Southey Wood.

2002

As usual,
Ferry Meadows CP and Woodwalton Fen NNR provided most of the records with birds reported from only a further 14 sites. Notable counts included 60 at Woodwalton Fen NNR on 13 Jan and 30 Mar (both RMP).
Smaller numbers were at Castor Hanglands NNR, Dogsthorpe, Elton, Monk’s Wood NNR, Orton Mere, Southwick Wood and Stamford. A single flew over Peterborough railway station 14 Jun (BHS) and two pairs bred at Ferry Meadows CP (MJW).


2001
Rare resident breed, scarce passage migrant and common winter migrant.
At
Ferry Meadows CP, from a single bird 13 Jan (RD) a flock quickly established itself around the nature reserve area with 15 on 27 Jan (CSh), up to 25 on 26 Mar (CHa) and 12 still present 16 Apr (GRH). The flock was also seen along the Bluebell Wood section of the River Nene.
During the breeding season single birds were seen at Bainton GP (WB), carrying nest material at Ferry Meadows CP (MJW) and
Dogsthorpe (DW).
Autumn records came from Longthorpe (two) 9 Oct,
Dogsthorpe (up to three) 14 & 20 Oct, Stamford (two) 28 Oct, Deeping Lakes NR (two) 28 Oct-8 Dec and Ferry Meadows CP (five) 30 Oct. At Woodwalton Fen NNR seven were present on 4 Nov, building to 14 on 11th and up to 60 present 16 Dec with 40 still present at the year end (RMP, SPD, MW et al). One to two birds were present in Dogsthorpe 23-30 Dec, with two over Fletton BP 10 Dec and singles at Baston Fen NR 25 Dec and Orton Brimbles 31 Dec.

2000
Widespread summer visitor and common migrant.
Reported from Holme Fen NNR with a maximum count of 100 on 28 Jan (KWo) and Ferry Meadows CP, with a maximum of 60 on 27 Jan. Also recorded at Belham Wood, Yaxley Fen, Morborne Hill, Castor Hanglands NNR, Eldernell, March Farmers, Woodwalton Fen NNR, Milton Park and Tallington GP. The only summer record was of an over-flying bird at Ferry Meadows CP on 17 Jul.
1999
Rare resident and winter visitor.
Records were received from Ferry Meadows CP (MO) as follows: eight on 3 Feb, 24 on 19 Mar, two on 9 May and three on 11 Nov. Other records were of two at Parnwell on 4 Jan and 20 Jan and one at Castor Hanglands NNR on 8 May.

1998
Scarce resident and common winter visitor.
The largest flocks noted were 20 at Ferry Meadows CP on 9 Jan (BHS) and c20 at Bedford Purlieus NNR on 8 Mar (ARF). There was a mixed flock of up to 60 Lesser Redpolls and Siskins at Ferry Meadows CP (from 20 Nov, GRH et al). Other birds included two at
Baston Fen NR (7 Feb), five at Maxey (28 Mar), one at Baston & Langtoft GP (21 Jul), one over Market Deeping (25 Jul) and two at Baston & Langtoft GP (8 Nov).
