Scaup
Aythya marila | A* | Quite rare

1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2003
2003
Rare passage and winter migrant.
There were two records: one on the River Welland north of Crowland on 9 Nov (KD), and a female at Nene Washes on the tidal River Nene on 4 Oct (JT, CK).

2002
Rare passage and winter migrant.
One record: a female or immature bird present at Prior’s Fen GP on 11 Dec (SPD, MW, KAF, MAW).

2001
Rare passage and winter migrant.
Two records: a female at Baston & Langtoft GP from 4 Jan–18 Feb (MF, TW et al) and three (adult male, adult female and juvenile) at Prior’s Fen GP 5 Oct (BHS).

2000
Rare winter visitor and migrant.
A long-staying but mobile female in the
Baston & Langtoft GP/Welland Bank GP area from 26 Dec 1999 to 7 May 2000 provoked considerable debate as to whether it was actually an Aythya hybrid, but photographic evidence supports its identity as a 'pure' Scaup (TW et al). A male at Bainton GP 12-26 Mar (BT et al) failed to meet up with its potential mate.
An excellent autumn followed, with an immature on the Nene Washes on 4 Nov, a pair there on 18 Dec (CK), two males at Ferry Meadows CP 6 Nov and a female (the same bird?) at
Baston & Langtoft GP on 20 Dec (WB). Two were on the Nene Washes on 29 Dec. Perhaps this species has been overlooked in the past, particularly on passage?

1999
Rare winter visitor.
An exceptional year, with singles at
Nene Washes 31 Jan, Eldernell Pit 13-28 Mar (CK) and Deeping High Bank 26 Dec (TW, JW).

1998
No records.
