This is a complete list of birds of the 120 sq km which form the Peterborough Bird Club recording area. The list has been checked and researched at some length but if you know of any birds that have been missed or if you think the status of any species is wrong, please let us know.
To give you an idea of how each bird occurs in the area we have assigned each a status (see the table below for an explanation of the terms used). The same terms are also used to indicate each bird's status as a breeding bird, a winter visitor and a passage migrant. For some species the status may be affected by their density at particular sites, e.g. the Nene Washes. In these cases the term Local is used. If at least some of the population are present all year then the term Resident is applied.
The following table describes the categories shown in the main list. These are the same as used in the BOU British list.
| Category | Description | Number in list |
| A | Recorded since 1 January 1950 | 276 |
| B | Recorded up to 31 December 1949 | 1 |
| C1 | Naturalised introductions Species that have occurred only as a result of introduction. E.g. Egyptian Goose | 1 |
| C2 | Naturalised establishments Species with established populations as a result of introduction by Man, but which also occur in an apparently natural state. E.g. Canada Goose | 0 |
| C3 | Naturalised re-establishments Species with populations successfully re-established by Man in areas of former occurrence. E.g. Red Kite | 0 |
| C4 | Naturalised feral species Domesticated species with populations established in the wild. E.g. Rock Dove Columba liva | 9 |
| C5 | Vagrant naturalised species Species from established naturalised populations abroad | 1 |
| D | Doubt over wild origin | 1 |
| E | Non-self-sustaining introductions | 30 |
| Total | 319 |
The following table describes the broad meaning of each status shown in the main list.

| Scarce | Several every year but only small numbers | 47 |
| Quite Rare | Annual but usually only 1 or 2 | 25 |
| Rare | Not recorded every year | 38 |
| Vagrant | Fewer than 5 records in the past 10 years | 97 |
| Total | 319 |
For unusual sightings some supporting notes are helpful. If you see a species marked with a star * next to the category please send some notes about the sighting such as where and how you watched the bird(s), bird's age, plumage, voice, behaviour, other birds present. All observers, however experienced, should submit notes of rarities. See Reporting records. If you see any unusual species, as well as noting as many details as you can, if possible, try to find another observer to confirm the identification. Ring Brian Stone on 07736 390717 or Steve Dudley on 07767 787287 for help finding another observer.
