The PBC field trip to the Norfolk Brecklands on 15th July looked rather appealing, with the possibility of encountering species such as Golden Oriole, Honey Buzzard and Stone Curlew. The 20 people who took part in the event certainly didn’t return home disappointed! The trip officially started at 09.00 in the Lakenheath RSPB Reserve car park, but day lists were already being created from the birds seen en route, including Green Sandpiper and Marsh Harrier.

The first target species of the day was Golden Oriole, and with Lakenheath firmly established as a foothold for the British population, we hoped to be lucky enough to see one. A long but pleasant walk along the river produced Garganey and excellent views of Hobby. Our efforts were well rewarded, with fantastic views of a female and juvenile Golden Oriole, the former parading itself splendidly with numerous fly-bys across the river. We were extremely lucky to see them so well, and the views were no doubt memorable to those present, especially the five who had never seen them in Britain before.

Our next stop was at Weeting, where we hoped to find Stone Curlew. Again, we left satisfied, with two birds showing in the field across the road from the car park. Although the views were distant (as is fairly typical with Stone Curlew) they were sufficient to please the three who observed the species for the first time.

The next destination was the raptor watch point at Swanton Novers, with the possibility of Honey Buzzard and a spot of lunch. Both of these expectations were satisfied, although only a few were lucky enough to see Honey Buzzard. However, the supporting cast of Common Buzzard and Sparrowhawk were enough to keep the others content. Three targets and all successful! Now all that remained was a visit to Titchwell to enjoy the rest of the day and add a few more species to the day list.

The reserve lived up to its reputation as one of the top birding sites in the country, with a collection of impressive species. Highlights included a Marsh Harrier, Little Gull, Black-winged Stilt, Spotted Redshank, Avocet and Little Tern.

The final total for the trip list reached 102, and a good time was had by all. An excellent day for those who attended and a strong recommendation to those who did not to take part next time!
